Frequently Asked Questions
Psychologists are extensively trained in listening and providing a safe environment, in which you have the opportunity to explore what you wish to talk about. You will be provided with an evidence-based psychology treatment, and most people find it becomes comfortable to talk once they have started their first session.
Most psychology sessions are 50 minutes in length. Which allows the psychologist time to document notes and record any plans following the session, before beginning the next appointment.
The recommended number of sessions will depend on your individual circumstances and will be guided by evidence-based research. This will be discussed with you collaboratively following your first appointment. The discussion will include information such as frequency of appointments, type of therapeutic modality, and the usual recommended length of treatment.
It is common for sessions to initially be scheduled weekly or fortnightly, and gradually reducing in frequency depending on your progress in treatment.
No, a referral is not required to see a Psychologist.
However, you will need a GP-referred Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) in order to receive a Medicare rebate for sessions.

There are two ways you can claim a rebate for psychology services:
Obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP or psychiatrist. Send us your referral letter before your first appointment and your rebate will be processed for you on the same day as your appointment. Once lodged successfully, Medicare will deposit the rebate into your nominated bank account. The Medicare rebate for a 50min+ session as of 1st July 2025 is $98.95 and is subject to change in alignment with Medicare policy updates.
Contact your Private Health Fund to check if you are covered for psychological services. If you are eligible, you will be sent an invoice after each session, and you can submit this directly to your health fund.
